Maintenance Free Bearings

Maintenance-Free Bearings Still Need to be Checked During Routine Maintenance

Some people question the validity of the term “maintenance-free bearings”, arguing that no mechanical device can be truly maintenance-free. So, if nothing is really “maintenance free”, what are maintenance-free bearings then? To address a few of the confusing theories out there, we would like to tell you more about these bearings.

If you see a product labelled as “maintenance-free” in this industry, it usually means that it is a plain bearing with self-lubricating sliding contact surfaces. You would be forgiven for believing that you would never have to pay any attention whatsoever to “maintenance-free” bearings, but this would not be entirely true. You cannot just install these bearings and then ignore them at every subsequent maintenance check. That is not to say that it is false advertising, because under normal operating conditions, self-lubricating bearings can be considered largely maintenance free, but we strongly recommend that you include them in your maintenance checks nonetheless, to pre-empt potential failures.

For OEMs and end users, maintenance-free bearings are highly beneficial. However, ensure that you are investing in a top-quality product that can live up to the maintenance-free label. These bearings’ benefits include:

  • They are strong and durable, and essentially requires no maintenance in normal use.
  • Reduced lubricant usage.
  • Provide a greater ROI.
  • Have a minimal environmental impact.

Some common sliding contact surface combinations in our range of maintenance-free bearings include, but are not limited to, steel combined with polytetrafluoroethylene sintered bronze, steel combined with polytetrafluoroethylene fabric, and steel combined with polytetrafluoroethylene fibre-reinforced polymer.
